SUPPLY LIST:
Luminious Landscapes in Pastel, with Jane Gonzalez
Welcome to Capture the Light: Luminous Landscapes in Pastel! I’m excited to work with you on your journey to creating beautiful pastel landscape art.
To follow is the list of supplies for the workshop; if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me, Jane Gonzalez, at gonzja00@comcast.net.
For your best workshop experience, please come prepared with the following:
Photos of landscapes you might want to work from to create your pastel painting. I will also bring photos to offer you additional inspiration.
Pastel Paper/Board:
Ampersand Pastelbord – pack of three 5x7” pastelbord in white or gray and/or one or two 8x10” pastelbord in gray
Pastelmat (Optional) - One or two 9x12” sheets in light gray, sand or sienna if you want to try the Gamsol underpainting. If not, you don’t need to get this. I will bring some pastelmat sheets if you just want to try it.
Options to Pastelbord:
LaCart Pastel Paper
Pastel Primer Paper
Uart Paper
Pastels:
Dry pastel half sticks: Bring any dry (not oil) pastels you have already. If you need to purchase a set, I’ve listed a number of options below that I recommend for the workshop. You need only one set of 12 or 24 assorted colors of hard and soft half sticks..
One full stick each of black and white pastel.
Hard/Medium Pastels: these are great for starting your pastel drawing; they’ll help you lay down initial value and color without filling the “tooth” of the pastel paper or board too quickly.
Prismacolor NuPastels
Rembrandt Pastels
Girault Pastels
Soft Pastels: richly pigmented and buttery soft, you work with these to lay down color over the hard-pastel base, or underpainting layer.
Sennelier Pastels
Richeson Pastels
Terry Ludwig Pastels
Mount Vision Pastels
Diane Townsend Terrages Pastels (Optional) – these pastels have more pumice and can help to add more tooth to your pastel paper or board. I will have some available for you to try).
A set of 12 assorted pastel pencils for creating finer detail in your artwork. I think Dakota Pastels store has some open stock pastel pencils, so you can also order some colors like blues, greens, sienna or sanguine colors rather than a set. I also have pastel pencils you can borrow. If you have a preferred brand, bring those. Otherwise, please choose from any of the suggested brands below.
Faber-Castell Pitt Pastel Pencils
Koh-i-Noor Giocanda Pastel Pencils
Stabilo CarbOthello Pastel Pencils
Miscellaneous Supplies:
Synthetic brushes, short handles, both some flats (sizes 3/4, ½, 1”) and round (sizes 2, 4), (if you plan to do the Gamsol underpainting) – Princeton and Robert Simmons have inexpensive synthetic brushes like Princeton SNAP series or Robert Simmons’ Simply Simmons.
Wedge-shaped makeup sponge for blending or dusting off pastel color in your artwork.
Hard-bristle toothbrush (to scrape off small amounts of pastel color from your artwork)
Tabletop easel (optional)
Gatorfoam board or illustration board – to provide a smooth, portable drawing surface on which to tape your pastel paper or pastel board.
Artist’s Tape – black is preferred over white, as white fades into the background.
Paper Towels
I’ll bring the following for you to use during the workshop:
Aluminum foil — to line the easel’s horizontal bar, if using an easel, to catch falling pastel dust. It makes it easier to clean up your pastel dust.
Gamsol – I will demo creating a Gamsol underpainting on Pastelmat
Non-latex light gloves or “Gloves in a Bottle” shielding lotion – helps protect your skin while working with pastels, and makes it easier to wash the pigments from your hands.
