Ongoing Kids Art Classes
For Young Artists Grades K–12
With Teaching Artist Athena Louscher

Under the guidance of local teaching artist Athena Louscher, young artists in grades K-12 explore their creativity and learn to build their own projects. The student projects and concepts taught build and grow, with more complexity as grades increase, up to support for high schoolers looking to build portfolios and/or exploring higher-education art programs.

Lessons incorporate art history, technique, art appreciation and industry knowledge, broken down by grade level. Each program includes opportunities for students to exhibit their work.

This program supports students exploring their creativity and learning new ways to make art, and helps them understand where those techniques came from and why. It provides a deeper understanding of how art guides and influences society as well as the myriad of paths art manifests in the industry today.

Each term, students develop creative thinking skills as they work on projects that represent their unique styles and ideas. The term culminates in a final presentation of their works. Learning outcomes include knowledge of art basics, connections between art technique, historical context and other subjects. We also explore application of technical knowledge, development of a portfolio, and presentation of final projects. This includes activities to be completed at home, idea sketches, brain storming, writing and other tasks as needed to complete final projects.

Art materials are provided, but students are encouraged bring any additional supplies they wish to work with.

Athena is available Monday through Friday, 9am–1pm, to answer questions and support students. Lessons will be video recorded and made available to students who miss a class. Athena’s class schedule aligns with that of the Northshore School District to provide an enriching after-school art program.

Private lessons are also available by request; please message Athena for more information.

Meet Your Instructor, Teaching Artist Athena Louscher

I studied art history and mixed media at Cascadia Community College, graduating in 2010. I continued on to graduate in 2013 from Cornish College of the Arts with quadruple focus in Drawing, Painting, Sculpture and Printmaking. I also have experience in altered books and book making.

I have several pieces in private collections around the country and a couple of public works projects.

I create and teach in a variety of techniques for each of my disciplines. My lessons are designed to give my students a comprehensive understanding of art and how it has evolved over time.

My works are subject to the flow of life and it’s ever present chaos that brings beauty, awareness, history, and community out of everything I make.
