Workshop: The Joyful Little Journal

With Teaching Artist Darcy Ballew

Two hours. One little handmade journal. All materials included.

This is playful creativity at its best. We make the journal from upcycled materials and scraps of fabric, small enough to ride around in your coat pocket, with a ribbon and a button to keep it closed. I bring all of the materials and guide every step, so you’re never staring at a blank page wondering what to do.

The making is the first bit of joy. Soft fabric, a color you didn’t expect to love, the satisfying press of glue that actually holds. While we work, we talk about how to catch those small moments in a regular day, the ones that usually slip away.

Then the book goes home with you. When one of those moments shows up, morning fog lifting off the water, a text from an old friend, someone saving you the last cookie, you jot it down. Give it a few months and it’s full of proof that joy turns up more often than you’d think.

Make one for yourself, or make it as a gift. Both count.

I'm Darcy Ballew, a mixed-media artist and muralist based in Kirkland. I work in collage, ink, watercolor and acrylic, and I love giving old books and scraps a second life. Outside, I make nature art from fallen leaves, petals and stones, and leave it for the wind to take. I have a fine-arts degree and spent years as an elementary-school art docent and running summer creativity camps. Everyone I know is stretched thin, so I built these classes to be a real break. Your hands stay busy, your head gets quiet, and there's no way to get it wrong.
